Retired English teacher, current writer, and photographer. My first experience as a full-time RVer was back in the late 90s, when I purchased a 1999 Winnebago Itasca Spirit. My husband and I, piled our 3 little girls and family dog into that RV and began our life on the road. I homeschooled them and my husband worked as a fire sprinkler fitter on the Central Coast of California. Sometimes we would spend extended times in some very interesting venues, our most favorite was a ranch in Shandon, California.

Then I came up with a wonderful idea. I decided to write a book about celebrity tombstones: Morbid Curiosity: Celebrity Tombstones Across America. I along with my daughters, embarked on a 28,000 mile zigzag trip around the U.S. in our Itasca, taking pictures of celebrity tombstones and meeting some very interesting people who actually knew and grew up with these celebrities.

Putting this book together was met with many challenges that we now no longer have to deal with, thanks to the modern age of technology. This was before digital cameras, GPS, and the internet was in it's infancy. Much time was spend in libraries throughout the country, looking through card catalogs and microfiche, researching these celebrities. When taking photos, one was never sure if the photo actually came out as intended. Sometimes it was hit and miss due to lighting and conditions. Then when my girls went to bed I would set up my galley as a darkroom to develop the black and white photos that I had taken during the day. Fun times!

Sometimes we slept in cemeteries, bowling alleys, Walmarts, church parking lots, even the parking lot of Wrigley Field in Chicago. If we happen to be near a famous landmark we were sure to stop and see that as well. So my daughters were fortunate to visit every state with exception to Hawaii and Alaska.

Fast forward to today, my daughters have grown and are now roommates with each other in N.Y.C., living their lives far from the open road of their unconventional childhood. My husband and I, are in the process of listing and selling our house. Once that is gone, it's just the two of us and our dog Murphy ready to travel "where the sun keeps shining, through the pouring rain, going where the weather suits my clothes."

The time that I spent with my girls traveling will be forever treasured and were perhaps by far the best times of my life, but now another chapter must begin with new memories to be made. We can't wait!

  1. The trouble is getting it out of the seat. The seat belt repair is the easy part. 😀
  2. When I bought my motorhome, the salesman flipped me the keys and walked away. No one asked me if I even had any experience driving something that big. Thankfully, I had driven a school bus when I was younger. There were a few things I had to learn, which I did by reading the manual and asking questions. So far, it's been okay, the worst thing I've done so far is hit a few tree branches, oh yeah, and a stop sign. 😄
  3. Hello Fellow Monaconians. Recently my dog freaked out during a thunderstorm and chewed through my integrated seat belt on the driver's side captain chair. I have a 2009 Camelot 42 PDQ. Has anyone ever had to replace the belt? If so, how did you access it? I would appreciate any information you could through my way. 🙂 Thank you in advance.
  4. My husband just sent away for a multimeter, he will be checking all those things. I will post back. How can you short out the sockets? So I can make him aware of this. Thank you for responding to me. Every little bit helps us not to be alone with these problems. 🙂 We sent away for a solenoid, hopefully this solves the problem. If not, we will try by-passing it as you advised. I hate that switch by the door, however we are afraid to disable it, because it's what we use to get the electricity going again. Thank you for responding to me. 🙂 That's something to think about. We ordered a new one. If that one fails then we will by-pass it. Thank you for responding to me. That is so sweet! Thank you. 🙂 Everything goes dead and the Energy Management System panel goes dark. The only way to get things running is to hold the cut off switch and wait until the lights go back on with the EMS. Thank you for responding to me. 🙂 Thank you. I will show this to my husband, very interesting indeed!!! Joel's driveway does sound very pleasant! That was very nice of him to invite us. 🙂
  5. Hello Everyone, I pray one of you can help me. My husband and I purchased a 2009 Monaco Camelot 42 PDQ in February, sold our house Oct 5th and have been full-timers ever since. We are experiencing serious yet sporadic electrical problems. Now, this could be a coincidence, however, I think the beginning of our problems began when my husband jump-started the chassis batteries. They were weak and we couldn't start the coach, so he jump-started them with a portable battery charger. Well, he ended up cooking the batteries and they were smoking and bubbling. We, of course, have replaced them. Since then the electric would make a "clunk" sound and power off sometimes with just the touch of even a light switch. Then other times I can run the air, dryer, washer, tv, microwave oven, etc. all at the same time and nothing happens. Yesterday was really bad, we had to keep using the cut-off switch by the door to get things up and running again. It happened several times in a row and then a few times here and there during the day. When we first experienced the problem, we called Magnum/Intellitec and spoke to a very knowledgeable technician by the name of Chris. He explained that the “two systems” in the Monaco do not work well together as they age, and he installed a Multiplex Control Master to separate the “two systems.” Things worked for a while, but then he said there could still be problems that he was unaware of. He said that there was nothing wrong with the cut off switch and that it was doing what it needed to do. Also, coincidently our middle A/C unit “popped” and started smoking, the captain’s chairs, when I touched the switch to recline it, “popped,” and stopped working, I touched the doorbell and it wouldn’t stop ringing. I feel like I’m in the 1980’s movie the “Money Pit.” We are currently in South Florida and would not object to traveling most any where in the Southeast. I really don’t want to go where it is freezing, and something blows, and everything freezes. Does anyone know of an excellent electrician they could refer us to? I have faith that if we resolve the electrical issue(s) we will have a very nice coach and can live happily ever after. I thank you all in advance.
