  1. I have attached a picture of the cleaned skylight. I have removed it only to find that the inner skylight is bonded to the outer and cracked. I have bought the SB-140 and 1" self-drilling/tapping screws. Just have to order the inner portion. Re-read all of your comments and realized that I should have known that the two portions were bonded together. IMG_0341.HEIC
  2. Thank you for your replies. I guess I am a glutton for punishment. I have about half of the roof done. Still working on it. Maybe I will go over some of the old tape. I have a roll of 6" Eterna bond tape.
  3. Thank you for your replies. I have ordered the SB-140. I had seen that video that Cat Stephen attached and a few others. The videos didn't answer the questions I asked. None of the videos had a riveted skylight or one that was covered with tar tape. I was hoping to just remove screws and replace them with new ones into the original holes. Since I can't do that and was unable to find similar installations, I asked the questions, hoping someone in this group had done the repair and could tell me what they did. Also, so that I could confirm I was on the correct track. Georgia Mike, can you tell me what size screws you used? Were they self-drilling? Are the screws just fastening to the aluminum sheets of the roof?
  4. Unfortunately, it is riveted. Mineral spirits work well to remove the tar. The roof is aluminum. I also use a heat gun and putty knife. Hope to finally be traveling in the coach this spring and summer.
  5. I am in the process of sealing my roof and replacing the bathroom skylight. I have attached a couple of photos. The skylight was broken when I bought the coach. To seal it temporarily I applied flex seal tape. In the pictures you can see that I have started to remove the tar tape. I know that I will have to drill out the rivets. Question 1 is there anything I need to do when drilling out the rivets to protect the coach? Question 2: Is there anything special I should do about filling the holes from the rivets other than putting skylight caulk over them? Question 3: Are there special screws/size I should be using other than the obvious weather resistant such as stainless steel etc.? The replacement came from EZtops world wide. There are no holes drilled in it. I am assuming that I would drill holes in the new skylight between where the holes are on the old sky light. My plan is to place Eternabond tape over the edges like Monaco did with the tar tape and then use Dicor on the edge of the tape. Finally, the old skylight looks like it is bent to match roof contour. Question 4: Do I have to accommodate the contour with the new skylight? Question 5: If I have to place a bend in the new skylight is there a procedure to follow? IMG_0308[1].HEIC IMG_0309[1].HEIC
  6. 1) Noticed that there is a difference in the height of the floor between the slide out and the rest of the floor especially in the kitchen area of my 2000 Monaco Knight. Is this the way the coach was manufactured or is this due to a repair? 2) I am getting ready to re-seal the roof. I am waiting for some parts. I wanted to know what you thought of using 6" wide tape to go over areas where the existing 4" tape seems to be in good shape instead of removing the tape and replacing it.
  7. I want to thank everyone at this site for all of the helpful information. I want you to know that I do look through the site before asking questions. Unfortunately, there is always a lot of information to comb through and there are plenty of times when someone's personal experience is more helpful. That experience can be a little more illuminating to a person that is as dense as I can be at times. Anyway, I have found information In the Tech Tips Master file, Tip 115 on page 249. I was going to copy it in here but it is a PDF and I don't have software on this machine to copy it to this post. The file can be found on this site under downloads and is entitled Monaco Tech(nical) Tips.
  8. I was on my roof the 1st time and noticed what looked like tape going down the middle of it. In places, it looks like tape is coming off. Is this a roof seam? What is the tape material called and where can I obtain it? Is there a preferred roof cleaning detergent and method? Is there anything that I definitely should not do when cleaning the roof? Are there any tips or tricks that would be helpful in this project? Then would I paint the entire roof after the cleaning and tape is replaced? The outer skylight dome over the shower is broken. I think this maybe causing a leak I found in the bathroom. I was thinking about taping the dome with flex seal tape to see if that is causing my leak. and use the flex seal tape as a temporary repair. What do you think?
  9. I know I am late for the person working on their step. I just have to install the new motor and mine will be repaired. I thought that the controller was bad. In my research I kept seeing that a good ground was needed. So, I traced my ground wire and removed it from the chassis. I then cleaned the lug and the wire connections with a wire brush. Once the wires were reconnected, the controller tested good. The voltage to the motor measured at 11.75V and changed polarity depending upon the position of the door. I believe that when I get the motor and install it that the voltage will be sufficient to operate it.
  10. Thank you all for your stories. It makes me feel better. Just overwhelmed and out of large amounts of cash to put toward the repairs at this time. On another note, I have fixed the bed. I found a store on Ebay called Deelz4less. They sold me a new-used pump for half as much as Select Comfort wanted. I highly recommend them. So, one step forward that didn't break the bank.
  11. I was getting ready to retire and my dream was to travel around the country in an RV. Originally, I wanted to live in it 80-90% of the year, so I was planning to sell my house and buy a fifth wheel and a truck. For a number a reasons, my wife and I decided we didn't want to sell our house, but we still wanted an RV and to travel. We thought a used motor home would fit the bill until we sold our house. We saw a few at dealerships and watched adds. We found an ad for the RV in Craigslist. The asking price seemed like a good deal, so we went to look at it. It was a 38' 2000 Monaco Knight with 51,000 miles on it. We were told the MH had "new" tires and batteries. We were also told that it had been sitting for a short while. The owner used it for a TV show RV World TV, where he demonstrated aftermarket additions to coach. Supposedly, the MH had all kinds of things added. The inside appeared to be in good shape. Just extremely dirty. The motor started and purred. The coach could move under its own power. When I picked it up, the power steering line broke. Should have asked for my money back then. Instead, I had it towed to a truck repair garage. Part of the repairs would probably have to be done on any used coach. All brakes were replaced, fuel filter and oil filters replaced. Transmission was serviced and coolant was replaced. Normal things. Then the transmission control module had to be replaced and the alternator replaced. It was $15,000 to make the coach road worthy. The vehicle air conditioner is still not working. I finally brought the coach home where I could check out its systems. I am unable to check the stove because I need to get the LPG tank inspected before it can be filled. The only appliance that worked besides one of the TV's was the microwave. The select comfort bed doesn't even work. I found out that a short while meant 8 years. I also found out that most of the extras don't work and it is less expensive to replace than to repair. Case in point the tire pressure monitoring system. The sensors are $45.00 to replace (need 6) and I can purchase a new system for around $200.00. My dream has turned into a nightmare. Just a tale of caution for others.
  12. Just to give everyone an update. The truck mechanic, where the MH was towed, has finally received the majority of the parts. Hopefully, they will start on it this week. I will keep you updated.
  13. Thank everyone for their replies. I intend to do some repairs on my own. Unfortunately, the coach has been sitting for 8 years and although the engine is running the brakes are not working. One hose for the power steering is blown. I don't have the equipment or knowledge to work on the brakes. Don't know if I could replace power steering hose. On top of that I would have to get the coach towed to my home and judging for what it cost to get it towed to the mechanic, the cost would be at least $1000. It is about 20 miles from the mechanic to my home and the best way to get there is freeway. When I bought the motorhome, the previous owner didn't tell me how long it was sitting. He told me it had new batteries and tires. I didn't see any water damage. The inside of the coach just looked filthy and in need of a good cleaning. I thought some WD-40 and exercising of moving parts would solve most of the issues. Little did I know. Just another lesson of "If a deal sounds to good to be true, IT IS."
  14. I have my motorhome at a truck repair garage. The mechanics there tell me they are having a difficult time sourcing the parts needed. Does anyone know where I can get parts and part pricing. I have only asked for an estimate for the repairs necessary to get the coach back on the road. Just in case the website doesn't add the information below. My Coach is a 2000 Monaco Knight 36Z build on a Roadmaster chassis. What was supposed to be an economical entry to my dream is turning into a large nightmare.
  15. Thank you again Tom. I re-read the owner's manual and the brakes have hydraulic boost from the power steering pump. The brake electrical pump is in case the power steering pump fails. I do have the wiring diagrams that I downloaded from this site. Just having issues with reading and interpreting them. I appreciate all of the assistance. I used to camp with my parents in a 23' Prowler Travel Trailer. This motor home thing has a lot more moving parts.
  16. Thank you, Tom and everyone else who has replied. The reason this has all come up is that I don't have possession of the motor home. It is at a truck repair garage to get it running enough to drive it. I asked for a repair estimate and for them to go through all main engine, braking and steering systems. When I tried to move the MH a steering hose broke and the brakes didn't work. I found that the driver seat did not work as well but it did work when I jumped the house batteries. The reason I asked the question was because I don't want to pay for trouble shooting that will lead back to the house batteries that I now know need to be replaced. Measured voltage was 0.27 V per battery. The manual shows that the brakes have a 12 V motor attached to the master cylinder. Just want to make sure that it isn't connected to the house system like the driver's seat. On another note but similar vein: Previous owner told me the batteries were new. The date code on the Optima batteries installed in the house system is 606540597T. The first digit is the year of manufacture, the next three digits are the Julian day of the year. Per that date code the batteries were manufactured around March 6, 2016 0r 2006. In either case not new. Do you think the term new with battery means it should still be under warranty as a minimum?   17. Just bought a 2000 Monaco Knight 36Z. Having issues with the 12V Electrical systems. Is there anything that shows what is connected to the house battery system vs what is connected to the vehicle system? I have a number of devices that are not working that I feel should be on the vehicle batteries such as the driver seat controls. I know that the batteries for the house system are bad and have not been able to get the generator working or hook up to AC. I have hooked up the batteries to chargers,but the house batteries do not accept a charge.
