Directv east coast/west coast networks

Recommended Posts

I have had Directv since 1996 and subscribed to east/west coast networks.  Back then Directv add "rv" at the end of my account which justified having E/W networks.  Directv found that to be cost benefitical to RVer calling for a switching to a new "service location" several times a week.  I always thought the fee was for east coast.  My mistake as trying to reduce the constantly rising month fee and bad info from "customer retention" person, I canceled it.  Within a couple hours finding I lost both E/W networks I called back to get it reversed.  NO DEAL!  I was told that customer retention would apply to get channels 390 to 399 back but didn't hold out much success.  What is everybody else doing?  Ken Parsons 72707 02 dip

We have always been with dish at home since the 90's and when we got the coach, with traveler dish on the roof, we just take the living room dual DVR receiver with us. We don't care for local channels tho, that's what internet is for, for us anyway.

The FCC made a change in 1999 and again in 2004  which split the country. It used to be you could get WC, EC or BOTH.  In 1999 the networks sued for copyright protection and after all was said and done, Congress wrote a law which allows for a West Coast feed OR an East Coast feed but not both. It's supposed to be tied to your home address but obviously this is difficult for full timers.  You must file a DNS verification with them to get the service. It costs $15/mo. The DNS doc states you can't receive signals from anywhere else.  Google SHVERA for more info....At least this is how it was explained to me.......Dennis

Dennis.  Thanks for the reply on Directv.  I googled SHVERA and got several interesting hits but.  Could you write out what SHVERA means?  Also do you know of a way to get even "west coast networks" back?  Directv does have a "Network Waivers Unit in Greenwood Colorado with no phone and so far any response to a letter.  I have a mining claim in Nevada with no address for Directv to assign another spot beam to. Thanks again.

You have a good history with DirecTV.   I would call back and talk to the retention group.  THEY should be able to assist you especially since you have been with them since 1996.

I have been with them since 1995 and also have East and West Coast feeds.   I also have payment history going back to 1995 and can tell them exactly how much I have paid them over the years.  Fortunately we still have a stick house at the same location, and are close enough when in Oregon to continue to get even local stations.    I would hate to lose the east and west coast feeds.

I don't know about Dish if you can get East and West coast feeds with them.

Best of Luck .. keep us informed.

I have been with DirecTV for over 15 years now, that is after a horrible experience with Dish. I have had DNS since the inception and one thing I always said to myself, I will never call or question anything about DNS because I don't want to put that in the forefront of any discussion with a technical advisor. You just never know. BTW, I will never go back to Dish Network.

Distant Network Service (DNS) from DirecTV,  (855-774-3477 ), enables you to receive ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC channels from New York or Los Angeles.

If your main residence is qualified to receive Los Angeles/New York stations, you can also receive them in your RV, car or boat.

If your main residence doesn’t qualify for DNS, you may submit qualifying paperwork, (a completed  Mobile Vehicle Declaration of Intent form AND a photocopy of your vehicle registration) , to obtain the DirecTV DNS channels in your RV.

Boy have I learned allot since my original post.  First Directv under AT&T doesn't have trained personnel.  I have been told Distant Network Service doesn't exist even though it is on Directv's website called Travelers.  After asking someone else in tech support I was told to call Winegard.  I did call Winegard and a very knowledgeable lady said she would email the forms for DNS.  Wouldn't you know the form have in large letters the Directv loto.  Yet know one (over 7 different specialists) in tech support or customer retention knew anything about DNS.  I mailed in the forms to DNS in Colorado along with a very long letter.  Hopefully I will get my east/west networks back.  I will report when and if I do.  For those Directv customers, thanks for your help. Ken

We went to Direct TV back in the early 2000s.  When they merged w AT&t a few years back, the problems started.  Last year after multiple attempts of talking with them,  etc...we dropped them for Dish and are very happy w Dish.  I have 2 boxes in my MH we turn on and off (now from our phone) when we travel.  We would need to call to swap locals,  but takes about 10 minutes to do so.  We pay less each month now and have much more.   I would do it again.

I recently realized that with Dish I can change my local channels online rather than phone them (which, with the pandemic, can easily take 15 minutes before you reach a human.)  You need to have your dish locked on to the satellite, then go to Dish's website (https://my.dish.com/myaccount/dishoutdoors) and follow their process.  You need to get your location code off your TV screen and enter it online.  Boom, you are done!  It was quick to give me my local channels.  I was impressed.  Had Direct TV years ago, wouldn't go back!!!

It’s even easier to change your locals with the dish App on your phone or tablet. Just open the app and hit “on the road again” then hit “find me”. It will automatically update your locals based on your location

There is a caveat to this. If you have Dish at your sticks and bricks address and also in the RV you still have to call to change your local channels. When down in Florida last month we tried to use the Dish App to change our locals and it would not allow it. Only option available under Dish Outdoors was to wake up receivers.

Since I started this topic on "Directv" I will give you on Directv an update.  After sending in my application I called the normal sign in phone number and asked for DNS.  A normal person, not DNS answered and put me on hold.  After 20 minutes I hung up.  Well two days ago I went to 390-399 and wow!  I had 391, 393. 395, 397, 399. Networks "west".  Haven't see charge on my bill but guessing it will be $15 a month.  Really too bad that AT&T doesn't know anything about customer service.  Better day tomorrow.

AT&T lost us as customers years ago due to poor customer service.  They just got worse and worse.  We were happy w DirecTV and then AT&T bought them.  And the problems started again.  I repeatedly tried to not leave them for Dish, but when I did,  I felt the weight lift off my back.  Dish took a little getting used to after years w DirecTV,  but no regrets at all. I'd do it again.  Matter of fact, I have the Refer  a Friend for Dish.  PM me if anyone is going to use Dish and we both can save money.

Ken, and anyone else looking for information on DNS with Directv.... When you call, you MUST ask for the RV specialist. The entry level person answering the phone has a script in front of them that they are required to go off of. Their scripts do not include RVs/Boats/etc. only stix n brix.  Also, if you've been with DTV for over 5 years they have a LOYALTY department that will help you immensely if you have an issue. DNS is $15/mo, requires a signed waiver and allows for East Coast OR West Coast but no longer both. ...

Since we're all friends here, I'll tell you a short story about DTV. Years ago we were in Leavenworth Wa, and I had a remote dish out by the road. A guy with a fiver misjudged the road and ran over the dish destroying it.  Next time we were in Wenatchee I stopped by a DTV office to see if I could purchase a replacement. The lady told me they didn't have any spares but suggested I drive around and find a vacant house and just take it! How's that for advice? I ended up finding one at a thrift store for $10......Dennis

BTW Ken, sorry I did not get back to you sooner.  Trying to get all my 'honey do's done. :)..D

just received this today..

Regrettably, we must inform you of a new law that affects your programming. Until recently, the Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act Reauthorization (STELAR) Act authorized DIRECTV to provide you access to your out-of-market broadcast networks—ABC, CBS, NBC, CW, and/or FOX. Unfortunately, Congress has decided to not renew key provisions of this law. As a result, on June 1, 2020, we no longer will be able to provide you access to these out-of-market channels. These are not available anywhere else. However, this change does not affect access to your existing local network stations.

If you’re paying for these channels, you’ll receive a credit within 1-2 billing cycles for this programming change.

If you have any questions, please call us at 866.595.9429.

Thank you for choosing DIRECTV.

Prince.  I too received the same email from Directv.  I guess that only option other than switch companies, which I would never do, is to call Directv everytime I move or get Directv to adopt Dish's ability to allow customers to be able to do switching themselves.  I certainly would not spend the $$ to re-antenna.  Time will tell.  Ken Parsons 72707

I am not sure the email is real.  I searched my account on DirecTv, looked for any information on their site, nothing there.  I googled loss of DNS, networks on DirecTv, etc, and found nothing.  I am certainly hoping this is just a scam email.  Time will tell.
