Roadside Assistance Advice from Clark Howard

Recommended Posts

We often have discussions about roadside assistance (Coach-Net vs FMCA vs Good Sam, etc).  One of the things you hear me say is to NOT use the roadside assistance from your insurance company - ESPECIALLY for your motorhome. Here’s an article from financial guru Clark Howard on the “why”.  It specifically mentions State Farm and Progressive, who insure a lot of motorhomes.

Thanks Scotty, that was very informative.

The insurance agent that I use (thru FMCA) advised the same with one exception and that is: if you were in an accident and a tow company refuses the tow because of a claim filed or to be filed. In that case, you may need to use the insurance company’s RSA. That also depends on the vehicle (eg a car) and the specific situation.

Thanks Scotty for posting this.

When we first got our coach (new in 2007),  within a year, while on a trip, we had a catastrophic tire failure for a right rear GoodYear.  Had TPMS, but no warning.     Didn't have any 3rd party RSA, so called progressive.  What a fiasco!!   Gal answering phone was clueless.   Transferred to supervisor, still clueless.   They couldn't comprehend we needed a tire brought out and installed.  I went round and round with them for 45 minutes.  Finally told them I'd take care of it.

Meanwhile, my wife on other phone found a local shop that had our tire size.  They came out a hour later, with the tire.   I paid the guy for the tire, labor and service call.

After getting home, and talking to our agent, we decided not to file a claim, for your exact reason.

We  signed up with  CoachNet right after that.   But of course, never have had a claim.
