Teton Scenic Byway

Recommended Posts

Since you’re starting on the west side of Teton Pass and using the interstate, not sure what your concern is until you get to St George. Need more details of that area and why you want to go to Page?

  • Jeff H changed the title to Teton Scenic Byway

I use Google Earth to look at a route that I may have concerns on.  It shows elevation as you follow the route.

But bottom line is if you have to get somewhere you may have to take a route that has some climbs and decent.  Last year in SW Colorado I had to tackle some hard climbs, I just pulled up my big boy pants and did them.  The climb is pretty straight forward, just have to downshift to keep RPM's up and watch temps.  Declines just kept speed under control.  In both cases I ignored the idiots behind me.

Using Google Earth I did choose the lesser of two routes if I had to get somewhere.

Took this route out of Tetons NP, very pretty, no problems with steep climbs.

Also drove the rest of your route with no issues.

Driving 40' Dynasty (370 HP) with motorcycle lift on back and 4 door full size pickup.

It's been quite a while since I went that route but as I recall the road to Page from Moab takes you hair rising  switchbacks as you desend into monument valley and valley of the gods. I might attempt it in a class b van but nothing bigger.

The last stretch of 89A from Flagstaff into Sedona is known for a steep grade. It is, as I recall, 7 or 8% grade. Definitely use engine braking and take it slow.  The alternative is to head to Sedona via Camp Verde, a relatively small detour but a lot safer.
The stretch between Flagstaff and Zion is very doable even for my gas engined coach in 2022.

I make use of RV TripWizard and use its incline feature to check elevations and inclines on my route. Unfortunately it displays the complete route and does not zoom in with the rest of the map. My solution is to have a separate trip (called Check Incline) where I enter the relevant towns either side of the areas of concern to get better resolution and detail of the incline in that area.

Thanks all

I may have clicked on the map and changed the route, or the screenshot was zoomed out too far.  It is primarily interstate except for this section, Hwy 101 and 20.

The other question I should ask is, what is the weather like at the beginning of November?

Getting hard to predict the weather.   I use weatherunderground.com and go into the calendar and look at the history for several year.

I'm getting ready to leave on a trip to the NW, and then traveling down through OR & CA.   I decided to leave in October because temps are normally still pretty high until then, I'd rather be in cooler weather then warm.  But now they are calling for an el nino weather pattern which could make a big difference.   They've already had a snowfall in the CA mountains.

l have traveled in this area many times.  Bozeman to West Yellowstone is not a problem some curves and grades.  Hwy 20 out of West Yellowstone isn't a problem.  Getting back on I 15 where you show on the map will make it simple to Salt Lake City.  Traffic in Salt Lake City is terrible, use the west side I 215 bypass.  Going south out of Salt Lake City on I 15 and US 89 is not a problem to turnoff of US 89 south of I 70.  Here you will drive a curving but scenic route (just did it a month ago). This takes you by Bryce Canyon NP and the backside of Zion.  US 89 from Bryce to Page again is curving and has some good grades.  Not any real problems, just need to be aware when driving.  US 89 from Page to Flagstaff, we turned off at the east entrance to Grand Canyon NP, is very rough and bouncy.  Need to slow down many places.  I 17 from Flagstaff to Phoenix has a couple of good upgrades and downgrades.  Trucks regularly travel the route, so you just need to be careful.

You didn't say when you are planning this trip, but I wouldn't recommend it after October 1st.  You will be going over 7,000 and 8,000 ft. passes and possibly see snow near West Yellowstone and Utah.
