Flashing Multiplex Switches

Does anyone know what it means for the buttons on every multiplex switch pad to flash simultaneously about 5 or 6 times whenever any button is pressed?  Doesn’t make any difference whether it is a light button or any other.

on mine it was a bad connection in a terminal in the connector on the back of the buttons. When that happened all the buttons stayed lit and nothing would worked till I remedied the issue.
