  1. UPDATE-  FOUND THE PROBLEM!  I got up there today and found a tiny crack between the EternaBond tape and the skylight!  It was so small I would never have thought that any water could get in, but when I pulled up the tape there was water underneath!  While I was working on the sealing I accidently pressed my hand against the plastic dome and it split wide open!  😲

Well, it was 18 years old so I guess it's about time!  I found a replacement on Amazon and ordered it along with the special sealant that vito.a suggested.  I will be finishing the sealing with the EternaBond 4" tape and Dicor 502LSW sealant.  Hopefully when I get this installed and give it a good water test with the next heavy rain, that I can go ahead with the ceiling replacement.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and suggestions!  👍🙂

  2. I'm gonna get back up there today and look at it again for cracks.  It's hard to believe it could get that much water in between the layers with a crack that hard to see!  Anybody have a part number for the outer dome and where did you find it?  How is the outer dome attached?  Thanks for all your help!

I thought the water was appearing in the skylight (which is higher than the ceiling)?  The water isn't going to rise above the crack (unless pressurized water pushes ater in).

I misunderstood what you were saying, that is, to use a hose on the skylight, right?  I thought you were talking about the roof area.  Sorry 'bout that!  🙂

Use a garden hose and start from the lowest level and water.  Slowly (across many minutes) higher until you see water accumulation where it doesn't belong.  Walla...you found your leak.

You can't see above the wood ceiling to know where the water is getting through the roof.

  5. I've got a REALLY weird problem!  I've been fighting a roof water leak in the bathroom for a long time now, and thought I had solved the problem!  WRONG!  I had a bad leak around the Fantastic fan opening.  After re-sealing it I pulled out the ruined vinyl ceiling to expose a lot of rotted wood.  At that time I discovered there was water collected in the air space between the inner and outer layers of the shower skylight.  I drilled holes to let the water out, then sealed the holes with clear silicone.

I have been spraying the wood ceiling for mold after removing the vinyl and before replacing the vinyl.  Yesterday we had a huge rain that I knew would be a good test of my repairs.  I inspected the ceiling yesterday afternoon and there were no signs of water on the wood.  Then I looked at the skylight again!  It again had a large amount of water between the layers!  I can't imagine how it's getting in there!  I resealed the skylight a couple of months ago with EternaBond tape, caulk, and a coat of liquid rubber.

Does anyone have any idea how this water is getting into the skylight?  I really appreciate any advice you can offer!  🙂

Believe it or not your very best source of information will be a marine upholsterer. They deal with these types of ceilings all the time in boats and yachts. They also deal with mold issues.

While I am an upholsterer my specialty is NOT marine fabrication. There are tricks to the trade and these types of ceilings have many tricks including sourcing the right materials such as glues, vinyl, scrim/foam, etc. If you have a marine upholsterer close to you who does boat interiors you may want to check with them. Sorry I cannot be of much help.

    Thanks for the tip!

I have a 98 and low and behold my rubber roof failed and my whole ceiling is stained. The rubber roofing looks okay until you look close and see micro holes in it. My shower skylight was breaking apart from deterioration but was not leaking. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. It depends if I keep it. I have the textured material they used in the cupboards and asked a shop and they said nothing can be done. I tried cleaning the stains and gave up on that.

What is under the foam, Luan board? That padded ceiling is done in 4 foot sections with a nailing molding between them? I think I might try taking it out and painting it with a night star scene. You could even try gluing on some ceiling tiles or ask a designer what would look good and be unique. Otherwise take the roof off and the ceiling. Recover it and bolt it back down. The nice thing with RV's is the projects are small and easy to change. If you have a rubber roof get it recovered or maybe re-coated as they only lasted 15 years

The ceiling has a layer of thin particle board above the padded vinyl.

Joe, while I've never tackled the project in a motorhome, there are many alternatives available for other applications. I see no reason why your idea will not work. Another option is to simply seal the material near the edge and cover that with a piece of moulding. You could wrap/glue the moulding with the same material as the ceiling and it would give you a finished look. Hopefully the mold issue will be confined to the bathroom area. Mold can be treated and it's good you're having a professional look at it. Best of luck. Be sure to post before and after pictures.....Dennis

That moulding would be a PITA with the door frames, etc.  It will definitely be a last resort!

  8. I have had a problem with a roof leak for a long time!  I have resealed all the openings, or thought I did, but I kept getting water dripping from the bathroom ceiling with a heavy rain.  It was leaking from around the two vent fans and along a trim strip between two sections of ceiling.  Well, I finally I got my son up there, thinking two sets of eyes are better than one, and he found a potential problem with the caulking around the vent above the fridge.  He resealed it and SHAZAM, the problem is gone!  That's the good news.

Now for the bad news!  The ceiling material is vinyl with a 1/4" foam backing.  I let the problem go on so long that I now have two more problems.  The water caused the material to shrink, pulling it out from the trim strip, AND there is extensive mold on the foam backing!

I contacted a local cleaning company that deals with mold problems and they will be coming out next week to assess the mold problem.  I've got to replace the ceiling in the bathroom but I'm concerned that the water may have migrated above the ceiling in the kitchen and caused mold there also.  There were no actual leaks except in the bathroom, but if there is mold above the kitchen ceiling then I want to find out how serious it is.

I found replacement ceiling material on Amazon but immediately saw a problem with installing it.  I found out that the entire ceiling, front to back, was installed before any cabinets, walls, etc. were put in.  I'll have to use a razor knife to cut the old ceiling material all around the room.  The problem is how to conceal the edges of the new material.  I can't put up small quarter round since some of the walls are wood and some are white board, plus it would be a real pain to get all that moulding fitted around the doors, etc..  I think I can start gluing the material at the wall, leaving a small gap, maybe 1/8", and leaving about 1/4" of material hanging down.  Then I will use a wide flat tool to push the 1/4" excess up into the 1/8" opening, hopefully giving me a finished look.  Have any of you ever replaced this type of ceiling material and if so, how did you do it?

Any advice on this whole project will be greatly appreciated!

  9. Hi Dennis!  Yup, I had the same problem with the tiny print!  I used a scanner to copy the entire manual, then I used the editing process to blow it up so I can read it easily.  I can copy my finished pages and e-mail them to you if that would help.

    Joe,

I guess maybe the RR8S would be the closest. However it is not a Raised Rail, you have the premier 8 bag Semi-Monocoque Chassis.

The 8 stands for 8 air bags and the S stands for side radiator. That was one of the main criteria why I chose the 2002 Windsor back in 2003.

Why would the Monaco 2002 sales brochure say it's a RM8H?

Wow, that looks really stable, and the video quality is great for the price point.
Can it automatically track the subject and keep it in the frame?

What's it's top speed?  Interesting in tracking a vehicle.

    Thanks,

    David

Yes, it has the "follow me" feature but I haven't tried it yet.  It has high and low speeds but I don't know what they are.  Right now I'm taking it slow!  🙂

Another update! All of my flying has been in late afternoons with the winds calm. Yesterday we had a thunderstorm pass through a few miles away and we got some winds from it, gusting to probably 20 MPH. I decided to see how the SG906 Pro would handle in the wind.

I was very nervous so I lifted it off slowly to see what would happen. A few feet off the ground and it was still steady. I began to lift it higher, still steady. I took it up to about 100', above the surrounding trees which were whipping around pretty good in the gusty winds, and it was rock steady, hardly any movement! I was totally amazed. I forgot to take the cover off the camera so didn't get any video. I'm really happy with the results and further convinced that I made the right decision in the purchase!

Outstanding Joe! I am glad we got to see the pilot too.

Safe flying now and let us know when we can see your video of the acrobatic routine you are planning to do with inside and outside loops.  😁

I don't know who that old guy is flying my drone!

About a month ago I bought a DJI Mavic 2 Pro.  It is my first drone and it takes amazing 4k videos and still pictures.  Spent 5 days flying it at a resort in Kerrville.  Has lots of built in routines and safety features.  Could not believe the videos it took from 400 feet in the air.  Most fun I have had in months, sure made f orget about the covid.

Is that an early birthday present?????

    Birthday and Father's Day!  🙂

Tried it in the back yard yesterday.  Yeah, I know, not a good idea, but I kept it low and slow and was prepared to cut the throttle if something went wrong.  It is incredibly stable.  I pressed the auto takeoff button and it rose to about 3' and just waited.  I tried to familiarize myself with the simple functions.  Whenever I take my hands off the controls it just hovers there in the same spot.  I'll be playing with it late this afternoon when it's a little cooler!  So far I'm really impressed!

Well, for a Hattiesburg boy that went to MSU and now lives in GA, I do OK. My in-laws live just up the road from you in Aberdeen.

The site is a lot of work (I guess it’s my hobby??) but I enjoy doing it. 😉

WOW, small world isn't it!  🙂

so...  you guys that have cut and altered your cabinet...  what did you use to cut it?  I would imagine a very straight cut is going to be needed to get it to look right when you match the pieces back together.

I had a cabinet shop do it.  I didn't trust myself on that!

Also I think it all depends on what you’re using your drone for too. Do you have cameras on it or not? They should have a different category name for cam drones vs non cam drones. I’d only be interested in cam drones and taking video/pics of places we go. You get a totally different perspective from the air as to where you are. As long as you fly it in the legal air zones and not using it as a creeper peeper

Take a look at the Beast SG906 Pro.  It has really great features at a very reasonable price!
