  1. Point taken on de-rating..

In the case of my 2001 Cummins, the 260 hp 450 torque rating pushed the limit of the Allison 1000 (rated 450 max torque input).  I put water/methanol injection on the engine and the red transmission light came on, so I took it off.  Also, I should have realized that the air compressor input tube comes off the intake manifold and was in essence feeding my air compressor with a fuel/water mixture.

  2. Thanks for all your input.  You got me thinking in the right direction.

Since this is the same motor they put in a 2001 Ram 3500, I got a quick answer: "around 20 psi".

img_2948 gives a closer look at the compressor side. Dirty, yes. But for 22 years I think not excessively so.

img_2943 zooms in on the intake boot and discharge tube.  Thankfully no sand.

img_2944 is the exhaust side.  A shot of compressed air blew the soot off, not really carbonized at all.

  3. Since I am changing the head gasket on my 2001IMG_2929.thumb.JPG.8bc8ea3ae82860283fbc5975249e4e8e.JPG Cummins ISB 5.9 24 valve at 128,000 miles, I pulled the turbocharger for inspection.  I have no complaints, other than the fact that the boost guage has never pegged higher than 18 psi, whereas many others have stated they get up to 30 psi boost readings.  I know very little about turbochargers, the blades spin smoothly, there is very little axial play in the shaft.  There is a strange scratch pattern on the compressor vanes, but it doesn't look serious.  So I'm inclined to reinstall it as is.  Any advice or input?

  4. I Stayed in Mesquite Nv. overnight on Tuesday (July 18) temps were 113.  Wedneday I crossed thru Las Vegas (110).  Major traffic and accidents. I spent 1/2 hour creeping along, watching my engine temp rise to 200, and trans went up to 210.  Hemmed in on all sides by big rigs, all pouring out massive heat. Every year since 2010 I pull my CAC and fan (rear radiator model) and pressure wash the radiator to sparkling clean from the inside.  Maintenance pays off. I've got it down to under 1 hour to pull both.

Afteimg4093.thumb.jpg.c478bac4b088ca3be512498e3e67b0e9.jpgr a logical progression of checking ground and power resistance, and bypassing the ignition switch, I unbolted my starter and found chipped teeth on the pinion gear. Same symptoms as you are experiencing.  The Flexplate had taken a beating from the chipped pinion gear and I ended up replacing that too.

  6. if you have your coach raised on a pair of 20 ton jack stands, a standard 3-ton floor jack has no problem lifting just the weight of the axle. Once I allowed the axle to hang by the shocks and the weight popped the oil reservoir open on a new Bilstein.  I no longer let the axle hang upsupported. Some air springs have the bottom bolt threaded into plastic. That would be an even more expensive fail.

  7. I have made some mistakes raising wheel(s) off the ground with jacks:

One time, the weight of the unsupported axle caused my Bilstein shock to come apart, leaking oil. Scratch one $140. shock.

Another time, my windshield cracked.  Lucky me, my deductable is only $250.

As for the air bags, I can't say for sure if the failure at 120,000 miles was caused by unsupported axle weight.  However, as the axle is raised beyond normal travel, the panhard arm pulls the axle out of alignment and causes the air bags to lose vertical alignment, resulting in a contorted shape.  Setting the chassis back down and inflating the suspension causes some very loud popping noises as the wrinkles in the air bag are violently pushed out.  I now lift in stages, jacking the axle up before it leaves the ground.

Made it home 1000 miles just fine with my new flange and a stainless amazon band clamp. In fact it may be the permanent fix! 5.9 ISB owners should consider these 2 parts as a good carry spare, the exhaust on the 5.9 and 6.7 are known to break there after I have done some research. Thanks for all the replies.

Thanks for the tip.  I will file that info.

  9. I've been launching my boat with my 32' Motorhome for 21 years.  Never an issue until 2 days ago.  The ramp in question dropped off to about a 30 degree angle just 2' from waters edge.  Once my wife drove the boat off the trailer I put it in drive, gave it some gas, and released the parking brake when the torque built up.  To my horror the wheels started spinning and the RV slid back 3' or more.  After  a couple seconds of terror, the spinning wheels ground the algae off the slick ramp and slowly the RV crawled back up onto dry ground.  I was so shook up, I retrieved the boat (not letting the RV tires get wet). Parked in my campsite and poured a couple of stiff drinks.  I never put my boat back in the water that weekend.

  10. I passed westbound thru Van Horn on March 9, 2023. The weather was calm.  However,  My RV and toad were struck by lightning in June 2009 near Van Horn.  I lost a windshield from a rock thrown up near Van Horn in 2011.  I had 2 tires blown out in Guadalupe River St. Park on Christmas Day 2022.  That area has become my "Bermuda Triangle".  Unfortunately, in winter I have to travel I-10 to avoid snow, otherwise I take I-40.  I also have taken to ty-wrapping my awning down to structural points, in fear of freak wind gusts that seem to be more prevalent these days.

"Don't mess with Texas" has become my Mantra.

  11. Accuride no longer makes the steel wheel no. 28484. I cleaned the wheels and shot a single stage acrylic. The wheels were black from petrified road tar and grease and many scratches.  About 3 hours work on each wheel in a tub of Simple Green and 3M purple scrub pads. As Ivan mentioned, breaking the bead is not difficult, I slid the wheel under the tow hitch and used a bottle jack to push down.  My wife is on vacation, she would not approve of me putting the painted wheel on the dining table.
