Dr Russell
I have completed the swap of the steering box to a TRW box and drove it for the first time this weekend. I dont have any play in the wheel but it steers harder than before and it will not center the wheels after a small turn you have to try to center it and that makes you chase it all over the road. Has anyone else had this problem. Thanks for any help.
JohnnyDiesel
Sounds like the box gear adjustment is too tight. If the gear box is tight, the system wouldn't return or center. Gear box should be set for zero backlash, no more.
dl_racing427
Also, make sure the box itself is precisely centered when adjusting, then use the drag link adjustment to center the wheels.
Ivylog
I would back off the adjusting screw 45 degrees … mark so you can go back if no Improvement.
ok-rver
Grease zerk at shaft of TRW box. Mine still had the rubber cap on so probably had never been greased. I have tightened my backlash almost a full turn, still have a little play. I shot 3 squeezes from a small grease gun into the zerk and it seems to have reduced the effort to turn the wheel. TRW bulletin states do NOT over grease as it will contaminate hydraulic oil. Edited September 14, 2021 by ok-rver spelling
Doug Hoegh
After the install did you set the poppets?
