2003 Chancellor 40 galley slide question

Recommended Posts

Greetings from a Monacoers newbie here!

I've been RVing for some time and owned many different rigs.  I'm a first time Class A owner now for a couple of years, and all has gone pretty well.  I have run across an issue that I had not first recognized.  The large galley slide that is on the drivers side of the coach directly behind the drivers seat does not seat/seal completely at the very top.  This seems to be more pronounced at the front corner than at the rear corner.  The slide operates just fine and there is no leakage, or issues apparent when retracted.

I took it in for some work to my local motorhome shop here in west michigan, and asked them to look at that while they had it.  They told me that they had checked and tried to adjust the rollers, but in the end, they felt the real issue was a 'warped slide floor'.  The shop foreman and I looked at what they saw and I guess I can see what they were pointing out.  I'm not totally convinced though.

I have spent some time parusing the forum looking for similar threads, but haven't stumbled across any that address the same issue.  Anyone out there with some first-hand experience with this?  The shop foreman told me he had seen this before on another Monaco.  Thanks in advance for any input.

Is this when the slide is open or closed.

Have you checked the bottom of the slide to make sure there aren't any problems there, usually caused by leaks.

On my living room slide I have adjustment bolts on the end of the long supports, and a I have rollers on the inside mounted to either the under side of the slide and/or he floor.  ~5 years ago I noticed that the rear of the slide on the inside was starting to drag a little on the tile, so I adjusted the two under the kitchen cabinet to lift the slide up a little.

I also have Dewald slide locks on it that when the slide is pulled in the slide locks help pull in the top of the slide to help seal it to the side of the coach.

Hopefully @throgmartin will see your post, he is the resident expert on this type of issue.

Sorry, I thought I explained it better than I actually did.  This issue is only apparent when the slide is extended/open.  All works and seems fine otherwise, it's just something that I had noticed.  From about 18 inches down from the leading top corner, and then across the top of the slide for about 2 foot or so, there is a gap that increases as you move toward the corner to a point where at the corner, there is about a 2 inch gap.  The shop foreman and his tech thought there was a 'warp' in the floor so that when the slide gets to full extension, that top corner just doesn't seat off.

The Dewald slide locks all work fine also, but are not involved in this situation.  I was hoping somebody that had seen/corrected the same issue might chime in since the foreman said he'd seen it before.  Might be a Monaco build issue.

As an addition to this, and possibly a clue.  The previous owner (not the original owner) only had it a couple of years.  I found when cleaning/inspecting the coach for the first time, two home made looking tubular shaped things roughly 30 inches long, that I have since determined were made to fill this very gap.  This must have been an issue from some time ago.

There are large nuts at the end of each arm on your slide. Inside the nuts is an Allen head screw that will adjust the tilt of the slide. (in/out at the top) Try a little trial and error to adjust the front. Adjust a turn or two at a time and cycle the slide in and out.

Timaz996,

I don't see any sort of 'arms' associated with my galley slide.  There are the locking systems on the exterior sides of the slide, but those are not what you are talking about.  There are four rollers that can be seen attached to the frame of the coach that the slide rolls on.  Can you be more specific on the 'arms'?  Are those visible under the slide behind the water seal?  Thx.

So it sounds like the problem is when the slide is extended and there is a gap across the top.  The slide is not sealing across the top.

Do you know what kind of slide you have, is it a flat floor slide or it it raised up

Maybe some pictures might help.

Jacwjames, thanks for the reply.  Your are absolutely right, pictures will help explain/visualize.   The coach is stored at the moment, but if the weather continues to hold I'll have it out and opened up to where I can get some good pics.  I'll post them then.

I have nearly the same situation as you do but it is the top rear that doesn't seal as well as the top towards the front of the coach when the slide is fully extended.  On my slide, most of the weight is towards the front where the sofa is located.  The rear end of that slide only has the table and chairs.  What I did discover is that if I stood on the rear portion of the slide and it was enough added weight to tilt out the slide corner just a bit to seal the top of the slide to the wall and it stays sealed.  The extra weight was enough to tweak this drop-down slide enough to seal it.

But, one thing I did notice is that when Monaco mounted the inside top seal on the slide the distance between this top seal is off a bit with the rear top corner being about 1/4" farther away from the wall.  Duh - no wonder why it didn't easily seal.  It's always been on my to-do list to relocate that seal but it never reached the top of my priority list.
