Exercise new FLA house batteries right away?

I'm curious how adding ThermOil to my FLA batteries affects them longterm? I know what the ad says but does anyone have any real experience?

Just FYI, I finally got water to the ice maker.  What I found was the water filter in the refrigerator was broken and not depressing the valve that lets water flow to the cold water outlet and the ice maker. $57 dollars and a new filter and we have ice. Thanks for all the pointers on where to look.

First off it would help to know exactly which Essex Keypad you are working with. I have schematics for the 1600 and 1700 series.

Need more information!

Some Accuride Wheels or maybe even Alcoa Wheels will have stickers on them stating something about a special coating where you should not use any products that will destroy the coating.

Not sure what your coach may have.

You will be shocked at the cost to repair. Insurance will probably estimate way over $30,000. Remember labor rates are at least $150 an hour. I would take it to Algadones and have Navarro's do the repair. He carries a USA cell and speaks English. Call him and if he is interested send him photos.

I have no idea regarding what is required for a repair like this, but it does seem to me that if you could find a donor coach at an RV scrapyard you could simply swap in the good parts with the exception of the rear cap/corner. Even there, they could probably cut out the bottom corner and fiberglass in the replacement.  Then it's just a matter of paint.

Aqua-Hot Model 100-04 Emergency Repair
Dr4Film

Folks, I just wanted to share what I did to get my Aqua-Hot working once again after waking up and finding no hot water yesterday.

Sometime ago I discovered that I had a small pin-hole in the filler neck of the Aqua-Hot boiler. In order to continue using the Aqua-Hot, I lowered the level in the tank by one gallon and have been using it that way since I purchased the coach in 2022.

Well, the reason I had no hot water yesterday was the Low Level Coolant Fault LED Light was on. So I added two quarts to the tank and the fault light did not reset. Now, I decided to check the integrity of the Coolant Level Float Valve by jumping terminals #15 & #16. When I did that the fault light went out. So my float valve has failed.

I then decided it was a good time to add the two bottles of Irontite to the boiler tank and fill the system up with boiler fluid. Fired the diesel up and wrapped paper towel around the filler neck to capture any fluid that could come out of the pin-hole leak. Well there was NADA, nothing. Another win for Irontite!

Plus the fluid is now entering the over-flow bottle like it should. Once the diesel burner shut off I filled the bottle up to the HOT level on the over-flow tank with normal green coolant as that's all I had in the coach. After all, once I installed the Irontite to the system the special boiler fluid is no longer needed.

Now I can watch the over-flow tank to ensure that the boiler tank does not get too low on fluid.

For the cost of the boiler fluid float valve plus the time and labor to install it, I will go without it. In my opinion that is just another failure point which generally happens at the worst possible moment when you need the Aqua-Hot. The older Aqua-Hot models never had a Float Valve plus I always watch my over-flow tank levels to make sure the tank is full of boiler fluid all the time.

Thank you Jim and Bryan for the coupling and elbow suggestions.  I may go with one of those depending if I can get it in this tight space

Ron,

These coupling look like they have potential to work.  It would be easier to really tell if the spray foam was cut away.  That "might" also expose if per chance, that fitting screws on instead of being a slip fitting.  Or if the broken fitting can be 'cut' (with slits as Jim J said) off and replaced with the flexible rubber one.....

Good luck, let us know how it goes!

Cleaning Windshield
FishAR

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I was going to use them when I got back to IL. Well I'm home in IL now, but the thing is my windshield shattered in Nasville TN so no need to worry about cleaning it anymore.

Surrounded by semis and dump trucks, no where to go, hit a huge hole on 65, possibly also took debris. Not sure. Heard a big pop similar to a rock hitting the windshield. It's spider cracking from driver side top corner and one crack is more than halfway down the windshield.

So I went from cleaning to insurance and replacement. Searching the forum on windshield replacements now.

just attempted to open up driver side bedroom slide. never a problem before. Slide moved 6" then the clicking sound started (used to hearing it when slide fully in or out). After several attempts, in and out, slide did finally fully extend. Don't know where to start? This slide has been opened only 3 or 4 times in last few years. Coach is plugged in, newer batteries. Thanks in advance!

The nice part about Fiberglass is that with the proper skills, most any part can be reproduced.
Fortunately, you seem to have escaped structural damage.  I would take it to a truck frame shop and have the alignment checked before starting the body repairs, just in case there's unseen damage.

Good luck getting it repaired.  I love the older non-slide coaches.

You can use a dye to determine if your wheels are clear coated or anodized. If the dye doesn't stain the aluminum the start with a medium top coat polishing compound. You should see quick results.  If they are clear coated then use the same process one would use to polish an automotive  top coat. If nothing happens then the wheels are anodized. Its much more difficult to obtain a bright finish as the coating is very hard. In that case you would have to use a hard metal polishing compound. I have polished some small anodized motorcycle parts with mixed results. Good luck tackling something the size of a wheel.

The clicking noise is the clutch slipping as it is supposed to do when it encounter resistance at end of travel. But yours is encountering resistance before reaching end of limit.

I’m sure you have inspected along the floor where the bed box goes across the floor to make sure nothing is in the way. It would be good to look against the wall when the bed slide is all the way in. I put shoes along side of bed box and have them get in the way of the bed slide fully extending.

Another place of high resistance is when the bed box rollers dig into the bottom of the bed box, leaving wood splinters to be seen on the carpet when the slide is all the way extended. Many of us have put a steel plates along the roller path on the bottom of the bed box.

PAC Brake and Brake Lights?
Happycarz

I might have missed something in this thread, not sure.

My 93 Dynasty, my 99 Dynasty and my current Camelot all use a separate relay to turn on the brake lights when the PacBrake is engaged.

Back in the CB radio days the truckers would yell at me to get off the brakes while going down long downgrades out here in the west.  I finally pulled the PacBrake brake light relay to shut them up.  The PacBrake works without this relay. The relay just controls the brake lights when the PacBrake is used. It doesn’t matter if you have either the floor pedal or dash switch for engaging the PacBrake.

Piggy backing on Harry’s explanation…which I was typing…

This system is pretty robust.  But….if you have something that is binding on the inside, like a box wedged on the other side of the bed…TROUBLE.

The next place….inside the bed box.  If some “Monaco” left over assembly debris just sort of “wandered” or vibrated around….then it can jamb the mechanism.

You may also want to limit the weight in the storage area under the bed, and on the bed while moving.

Like Harry, I too had to install steel runners under the bedbox.

To the OP.  I'd definitely make sure the rest of the piping is good.  Something caused the pipe to break at the joint.  Takes quite a bit of force to break and elbow.

FWIW, when I was building the house I had all the plumbing roughed in ready to pour concrete.  I put floor drains in several location in 7 locations along with stubouts to attach to for drains and 1st floor connections.  They were very obvious but it was an obstacle course for the small concrete buggies to navigate through

I was watching when they started and within 5 minutes a buggy hit a floor drain and snapped off the pee trap.  I saw a worker just trying to straighten it back up into position so I ran over an looked, completely broke off at a joint.  My guess is that if I wasn't there they would have poured concrete and said good enough.  But I went and got some tools, hacksaw, hammer and chisel and proceeded to get the broken coupling off and replumbed the floor drain back in.  One of the workers said "Huh, never seen anyone do that before"..

Then later after the concrete was poured and they between troweling they were eating lunch and told a story of a time when they were doing a job and using the sit-on type mechanic trowelers one got away from a operator and they tore out a bunch of plumbing, they halfway fixed and finished the job hoping no one would be wiser.

No wonder the job wasn't that great, but they were highly rated by other contractors I had contacted about crews that did concrete work.

Another Windsor owner had to replace his slideout switch, it was working intermittently

Here's what the bottom of my bedbox looked like when I redid the floor.  I added metal plate and it rolls much easier and is level.  Rolls easy now

Prior to fixing the bedbox I found that the pieces of angle that held bedbox to slide had worked loose, most of the screws had worked their way loose and it actually allowed the slideout to tip back and forth while bringing in/out the slide.  Had to remove the cover over this area under the bed to get at the screws, I replaced with larger and more screws.

Both of the above help my slide smoother/easier.

NO, you didn’t miss something.  That was OPTION 1.  “Modify or find out or fix” whatever is turning (yes…a relay…probably) the PAC’s  TURN ON ALL REAR LIGHTS.

That is the issue and DEMCO, I think, never understood or designed the system for a motor home that turned on the Brake Lights from an exhaust brake. Itbwas designed to use the common 4 wire “trailer” system,  BUT…Monaco energized or turned on ALL Brake Lights when the PAC is on.

SO….yes…PULL that Relay. Problem…there are no decent prints, that I have found, for the 2002 Windsor that identifies the Relay.  I can’t help Todd, so fellow Windsor owners would have to chime in.

My fix….find the relay….  Figure out which wires go to the taillights or the STOP/TURN…clip them.  Hopefully then the Cyclops or third light will still be illuminated.

Todd is not of a mind to start tinkering or modifying…. Nor does he have a good tech.

Suggestion 2 requires more “crawling” time…as in running a brake signal…and then installing the relays.  He has done this before when he installed his FASS and is not enthusiastic about taking on the project.

Option 2 is straight forward….but his “source” is E-Trailer and they might not be totally adept at chasing down the ground switched pedal signal…then also “modifying” the DEMCO, as there could be liability issues.

Reach out to Todd via a PM and discuss….

Jim has a lot of great information.  My comment on the switch.  Since the slide moves a little bit…6” and the clutch CLICKS….that means the switch is OK.  If it dropped DEAD….no noise….and then started up….bad switch.  Easy to test….the two switches will pop out.  Pull them out.  Label and take a picture of the back of each switch…SWAP THEM.  Odds are, same situation….just my take…

A simple inspection and pictures of the bottom of the sldie..where the roller are or run….  THAT WOULD HELP and focus the recommendations

While I was removing passenger side console to check wiring inside, when I removed, the screw from the console water started to come out.

About 1.5 glass of water came out and stopped. There is NO water line(s) inside of the wall to my knowledge.

We are in AZ where the temp is @ 99F now and rained only once for about 10 minutes about 4 days ago...

What could this be?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Yes, I reseated all of the connections and double checked the battery voltages to be sure it was all up to snuff. I think the device is at the end of its life as best as I can tell. Hence the hunt for a replacement NE I have tye cut out for the display. If I can't find a working replacement, I'll look at your solution which with the Bluetooth makes it a lot easier to monitor.  Thanks for the info.

You have a water leak.

Anywhere above where you saw the water.  Look at drip rails, screws, AC units, etc.  Windshield surround.

Everything on the roof.  Clean and recaulk anything suspect.  Dicor is typically what is used.

This was installed on our 2004 Dynasty and was used to auto start the generator on low voltage oR soc controlled remotely by an RC7 REMOTE. Yes it could have been used with victron but would require modifications which I was not willing to make

TOM This has been used years on our 2004 Dynasty to auto start our 10kw onan on  low voltage or SOC. The parameters are set by an RC7 REMOTE using a xnatrex inverter.

Please correct the the above statements  and change the title appropriately. AutoTempStart.

Thanks

Your Magnum RC7 Remote is what controlled the voltage and SOC for starting the generator.  This device is in addition to that functionality, to control generator starting based on TEMPERATURE, hence the name on the device "AutoTempStart".  It will not, alone, start on voltage or SOC, since it has no capability to measure or set those parameters.  Those must be set by some other AGS like the one in your RC-7 Remote Panel.

I'm not trying to be nit-picky, but want to make sure anyone interested, especially those who are converting to Victron equipment and find that AGS is not compatible with Onan generators, that this device will work on Temperature, not voltage or SOC.

It can be for the ice maker or it may go to a water filter under the sink for drinking water that usually is a small spigot on the right side of the a sink faucet.

Good job.  If the leak comes back you may try one of the replacement filler necks offered online.  They just clamp on.

As long as you have the over temp protection circuits, I'm not sure the float valve is necessary.

My suggestion is that it might be condensate from your AC drains. I’m not sure if a Cheetah has drain lines for condensate, or it just runs across the roof (like my Diplomat), but I suspect AC condensate and a possible leak in your belt line above the drivers window. Or the condensate drain line is plugged, leaking, etc.

Thats one area I would try to track down. Windows do leak, and that could be the culprit, but it’s more common for belt lines to leak.

…and a hint from the voice of experience… you can’t *really* tell if a belt line has popped by looking at it from the ground.  They can look fine from the ground and be totally separated on top.  Get on a ladder or up on the roof and check it from above.

OK...time to MAKE RAIN.  Flood the window.  Start at the bottom...  that will tell you whether it is in tract or what.  Mine showed up on the inside....NOT in the body.

Then start on each side and work your way up...  ESPECIALLY the top...

ODDS ARE, unless Scotty's comment is correct, it is in a FRAME SEAL.  Where the Frame meets the body.  These caulked joints fail. It it is on the top...big time.  But on the sides, blowing rain will come in.

Proflex is what you should use.  Use a "bent ice pick" and clean out the old caulk.  I would dampen a cloth with a smidge of ACETONE.  Wipe the edge of the frame and joint (think using a Q-TIP...not a wadded up rag..) That gets rid of debris and also activates the surface.

Then, Recaulk.  Time to check the OTHER windows and all the joints.  This is ONGOING...

FWIW, I mounted the display next to the solar & inverter displays, it was a chore getting communication wire all the way from my rear passenger side electrical bay where I mounted the shunt to the front overhead cabinet.

But with the bluetooth function you can mount the display anywhere, you could even mount it the outside compartment and check voltages using your phone.

There are not many solar controllers that have two outputs (house & chassis).

I know this is an old post but I have to do some work on my steering box and have a question. My question ism if I have to remove the steering box if it's more than the input shaft seal why the jack stands? Maybe I'm missing something but from what I see I should be able to remove it without having the vehicle off the ground. If it matters I have the TRW steering box.

Probably to get more clearance to work,  don't want to rely on airbags and jacks.  I made 6 ramps so I gain 6" of clearance with out air in the system.  Cut 2X10's 48,42,36,30" stacked and screwed together, added stop block on the four on the rear.

Turns out, the 450D holds so little, 2gal of -100 is enough to cover the change as well as top-ups!

I mixed it to give me -17C protection.

Malcolm, I had the same factory configuration. If you can sacrifice one or both of the inaccurate gauges, you would have a great place for shunt monitor(s). I just reused wires that were originally used for tank monitoring when replaced by Seelevel. Took some effort and rewiring but it is all in one place now. The old RV30 is now only charging chassis batteries.

PAC Brake and Brake Lights?

On 5/21/2024 at 8:36 AM, Tom Cherry said:

Yes to all you said.  One question…for clarification…. “Exactly” where does the Prodigy controller “receive” the Brake Light signal? As Richard and countless ofter pre 2005 and also prewired “trailer brake” owners have found out.  The pre 2005 had to have a conversion relay added to take the ground (switdhed) signal from the service brake pedal and convert it to 12 VDC POSITIVE.

If the Prodigy is receiving a “bulb or filament” signal, then, like Todd, that is incorrect and will cause issues.  The Brake Controllers depend on a push in the pedal positive signal,

Todd’s existing DEMCO and the wiring diagram show exactly that.  The flaw….as you pointed out…Monaco lights up the brake lights from the PAC.  Thus the normal “trailer/Toad” light signal comes on and stays on and the DEMCO thinks….service brake on.  It was never designed or wired to work this way.

There are two options as pointed out to adapt the STANDARD DEMCO so it will function as designed….

Thanks…

Sorry Team, My unit had the brake controller installed before I owned it.  It does not apply the brakes on the trailer when the PAC brake is energized.

I think that is reasonable, got about the same quotes +/- 3k five years ago and the visible fiberglass damage was less than yours but included a windshield. Settled at 27K check to do it in my shop. But I located the cleanup company (next day after asking the cop, when I calmed down) and retrieved the pieces, it wasn't too hard to reconstruct using the old shapes. Junk yards would only sell a complete cap at a crazy cost. Just labor was estimated at ~14K in the final appraisal by a third party pro. And thats years back. Good luck which ever way it goes.

I don't plan on going back to the special boiler fluid now that I have added the Irontite and the green ethylene glycol boiler fluid to the tank.

My engine uses the green coolant and now the Aqua-Hot does also. Frankly I like it that way as I only have to carry one fluid for both purposes.

Well, if your hot water smells 'funky' while your showering, don't drink any 😮!

We have never drank any water from the coach be it from our fresh water tank or shore water hookups. We use strictly bottled water or bulk Primo water refill bottles. We even do that when we are home in Flagler Beach.

Wife drinks bottled water. I drink what comes out of my taps ( other than in southern AZ).

I had a leak in the same line, found the leak, bought some SharkBite fittings, repaired line, not a big job once you find the leak.

Richard,

I don't know exactly what AH unit you have.  BUT...for the RECORD and from the STAFF. We have to post notes or qualify when certain things are stated here that are in conflict with the Vendor's instructions.

ONLY USE THE PROPER COOLANT IN AN AQUAHOT.  Read the manual for which Coolant is to be used.  From page 1 of my manual...which is a AHE-450-DE/DM

This Aqua-Hot product utilizes a propylene glycol
based antifreeze and water heating solution. This
Propylene glycol based solution is a boiler type
antifreeze that is “Generally Recognized as Safe”
(GRAS) by the FDA. For additional information
regarding this “GRAS” antifreeze product, reference the
Appendices, contact the Aqua-Hot Heating Systems
Technical Support Department at 1-800-685-4298, or
visit the Web site www.aqua-hot.com.

There was an issue and a redesign some years ago. Aquahot changed coolants from the "Ethylene Glycol" to the current non toxic coolant.  I do NOT know the year, but thought it was prior to 2006.

These NEWER MODELS are not supposed to use ANTIFREEZE or Ethylene Glycol as there is a concern about drinking contaminated water. Ethylene Glycol is considered to be toxic. Therefore, any member that reads this should be aware and only follow the Vendor's recommendations for their unit.

I do NOT know the year that the conversion took place.  BUT I was caravanning with several individuals with 2008 Navigators.  One had low coolant.  The owner filled the overflow with regular antifreeze.  The MH then had to be flushed and  such to eliminate any contamination.  I was walking by and noticed the jug of PRESTONE.  They were not aware of it.

My AH is a 2009 model...  Theirs was also supposed to use the Special NON Toxic boiler coolant.

Try Tag at 70 psi according to Toyo?
Venturer

FWIW: The recommended weight distribution for the drive and tag axles is to have 2/3 on the drive and 1/3 on the tag. In theory, that puts an equal weight on all tires. Personally, I prefer to have more than 2/3 of the rear weight on the drive axle for traction reasons. That also takes some weight off the steer axle giving me a higher safety factor up front. I carry about 38-40 psi in the tag suspension. This puts the drive @ 20,000 (23,000# rating) tag @ 7200 and steer @ 14,000 (15,100# rating) I carry 115 psi in the steer, 100 in the drive and 80 in the tag. My 43' Tiffin had similar weights and I ran similar pressures in it for 84,000 miles on two sets of tires. The second set was Toyo as are the current tires on my Executive.

I bought my 2008 Beaver contessa with the whole side wiped out. A bit more extensive than your. I will tell you the repair was a huge amount of work. I did the repair myself but I would agree 30k plus. Making molds sounds easy but is is not. First you need to make a buck. Then create a mold. Then create the part.

I could not find any body parts for mine. I had to create them all.

Bottom slide seal detached

Opened the bedroom slide on my new to me 2007 Safari Simba. The seal at the bottom has come detached in places and I can't get to it to reattach.  Looking from the inside there is a 1-2 inch gap so it needs to be there.  I would appreciate ideas as to how to reattach the seal and what to use as the adhesive. TIA for your time and wisdom!

Many, unfortunately, ways to attach seals.  Some pop into an extruded strip and you replace and push and “forcibly” get the seal to fit into mount or holder or track.

Many are double stick adhesive.  If the double stick tape fails, this is the following fix…find a new gasket or seal…that has the same profile and replace.  There are companies that sell most all of the ones used on our MH.

The other method is to remove or peel off the adhesive.  Not knowing how long and how much is detacched nor having pictures makes it tough….also, not knowing the area around it and the difficulty in working there.

I have salvaged sesls or gaskets thusly

Peel off the adhesive on both sides.  I use WD40. It is a kerosene based product and will soften most double stick tape’s adhesive.  Spray or use a cloth saturated and get off as much as you can.  Then it is sort of “what works best”. I have used plastic scouring pads to abrade off the remaining adhesive.  Stiff bristle brushes. My fingernails. You need to get the tape totally off ans as much as the adhesive film as possible.  THEN use a small cloth…think a knit T shirt scrap. Ue a cotton swab or put a little Acetone on the surface.  Then wipe or abrade and get off the final residue.

The Acetone will activate both surfaces (if the seal is attached to a painted surface).  The use CLEAR 3M VHB double stick tape. AMAZON has it in different widths and lengths.  If is the thinnest double stick tape, other than scrap booking tape I have ever found.  It works….

Good Luck.

Just a word of caution.  There are two different aquahot systems.  The older ones have external heating to coils OUTSIDE the tank.  Newer systems like in my 08 Dynasty have internal higher efficiency heating coils INSIDE the tank.  These latter systems require propylene glycol.  Earlier systems can use toxic ethylene glycol and stop leak additives if needed.

Richard, if your heat exchanger loop is internal to the tank - no way would I add any additive not approved as a safe in a domestic hot water system.

My 06 has an internal loop. I replaced my tank last year due to an internal leak.

I'm guessing, and Richard will correct me if I'm wrong, he has already added a toxic substance to the boiler fluid. So it doesn't really matter anymore!

Something I never really thought of when I first added a bottle of Irontite to seal my leaking boiler tank.

I would say a chance of a leak in the domestic water coil in the boiler tank would be slim, but not 0!

I'm a bigger risk taker than some, and less than others!

One last point, with your domestic water usually being under pressure, and your boiler basically not, if you were unfortunate enough to spring a leak in your domestic water coil, 'inside' the boiler tank, your likely going to know about it by your AH expansion tank overflowing. Since I've had a boiler tank leak, I monitor the level in the expansion tank often!

I had the same issue as described in this following post.  Since then I have not had any water coming out of a small pilot hole I drilled to monitor.  Been in lots of rain storms.  When I bought the coach 3 years ago I caulked every inch of it I could.

Thank you so much for the good thoughts. We've made it home driving straight through to Phoenix and I'm very encouraged by comments such as yours.I need to find a first class shop.We love those old monacos too without the slides and we just can't stand to have this baby totaled. We will probably buy it back and spend whatever it takes to make it right.

Captains chairs removal
Georgia Mike

I am pulling my Kustom Fit captains chairs out to get them redone and have looked on the site to find information about removal but all I find is about removing the base with the bolts that go through the floor. I want to leave the base pedestals and just remove the chairs. Is this possible? If anyone has experience with this I am heading over tomorrow afternoon to remove them and would appreciate any feedback. I know I have to disconnect the power cable to the chair but not sure how it comes off from the pedestal or base.

Your coach should have come from Monaco with Villa International captain's chairs.  They have four 3/4" hex head bolts going into the floor.  I'm not sure you can remove them any other way.  They are very heavy!

Thanks what a great lead. One body shop told me they were gonna have to completely fabricate the doors for that side. would have been a lot easier to call salvage yards.I'll look into this and thanks again.

Tag at 70 psi according to Toyo?
Ivylog

Congrats on your 07 Dynasty (would have helped posting) and yes 70 psi will support 10K of weight on the tag and I would start at 40 on the tag’s airbags… had a 04 Dynasty for 14 years. I would start at 110-95-70 until you load and then weigh. Most charts don’t go below 70 psi as supposedly that’s the minimum to keep the tire on the rim,

Just drove to the tire and replace all tires.

Here is what I did:

steering : 115 psi

drive: 95 psi

tag: 85 psi

In your engine compartment you will have an adjustable pressure gauge for the "down pressure" on your tag axle. You simply pull up the top of the black knob and turn to adjust the psi. This is while the engine is running and you are at ride height. Then push the black knob back down to lock the adjustment in position.

This should be all explained in your owners manual.

image.jpeg.2c0fb54bcffcbdc765675a8d2e632ff2.jpeg

I just read the manual on performing the stabilization procedure:

...

"Raise the tag axle using the tag axle switch on the shift panel"

Is that the "tag lift" on the valid keypad?

How do you know what is the right downward force to set? how do you know the the downward pressure should be 38 psi instead of 20 psi?

Please advise.

Thanks!

Until you weigh you won’t know BUT I doubt anyone uses less than 35 psi. Our rigs tend to gain weight over time and it’s a good idea to weigh every couple of years.

I redid my chairs last year and removed them from the floor.  I found it helpful to have the pedestals still on while working on them.  As Vito says... they are very heavy.  At least two to get them in and out the door.
