richmelcole@sbcglobal.net
Planning a trip next summer to explore Wisconsin. We will be coming out of the UP of Michigan and would like recommendations of where to visit and good campgrounds to stay. Thanks, Richard
Tom Cherry
Look around….decide what spots (see the WI dept of Tourism site). Then use this as your goto place for CG Reviews. Been using it, as it changed names, since 2006…very trustworthy. https://campgrounds.rvlife.com/
jacwjames
When is the visit planned? Sept/Oct is usually fall colors. One place to visit if you are near are the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior about 1/2 between Michigan and MN. Several campgrounds there, neat little town, a casino, and there are tour boats around the Island. Anywhere in North Central Wisconsin will have campgrounds, depending on what you are looking for. Lots of state campgrounds but these won't accommodate larger rigs. Lots of lakes and small tourist type towns each with different type of attractions and festivals. Haywood WI is known for the Lumberjack competitions, several scheduled throughout the year. Also near Haywodd in Trego there is a scenic train ride company if your into that. Several towns have water ski shows, most of the time they are free. Baraboo Wi is known of the Circus Museum. Wisconsin Dells is famous for the duck boat rides and water attractions. Lots of touristy type stuff in these areas, will be busy in peak season but this time of year not as bad. FWIW, I'm a Hodag😁 Edited August 24, 2023 by jacwjames
Venturer
A visit to Lambeau Field in Green Bay is a must if you are a football fan. Frank Lloyd Wright's "House on The Rock" in Spring Green is a unique experience.
Steve P
Don't miss the EAA museum (Experimental Aircraft Association) in Oshkosh WI !!
Benjamin
Taliesin was Frank Loyd Wright's house. House on the Rock is an "homage" of sorts? There's so much to see in a state, hard to pick what you might want to see? Rudolph cheese factory is worth a stop, maybe not a long drive if you're not going that way. Plenty of other cheese factory stores. Devils Lake state park, or the Wisconsin Dells (river, not the tourist traps) are worth seeing, but maybe not if you just came from the UP, you've seen that sort of thing without all the people. Lots of rivers to rent canoes or rafts.
Venturer
If you get to central WI, I recommend that you stop at the "Food + Farm Exploration Center" in Plover. One of my customers and friend built the facility with the help of many of his suppliers. My company (actually my sons company now) provided two computerized center pivot irrigation systems for growing the crops used in the facility. You will come away with a whole new appreciation for AG community. jacwjames
I grew up in Northern Wisconsin so I have to throw this into the ring. The fishing on some of the lakes up around Eagle River, Rhinelander, Arbor Vitea, Minocqua, St Germain are great fishing destinations. If you have a day to spare it would be worth while, Eagle River has 27 lakes in a chain and just renting a pontoon boat and taking a leisurely tour and stopping for a fish fry would be a great memory. Spent a month up there last summer and got to go fishing 10 days over a two week period makes me want to go back. My niece caught this musky ~15 years ago, weighed 44 lbs, catch and release. She couldn't lift it so her husband got his picture taken with it. Wonder if it's still lurking in the depths and if so how big???

lake49068
Highly recommend visiting Wisconsin's Apostle Islands! Beautiful area and the boat tour around the islands is a great way to see/learn about the area. We did not take the ferry over to Madeline Island (did not leave enough time) so would suggest making any stop there more than 2-3 days. And any time spent in Michigan's UP is special. Live in south central Michigan and usually make a late September trip to NW Iowa where my wife grew up...always go through the UP on the way west to avoid Chicago in at least in one direction. UP offers many wonderful things to see and the smoked white fish and pasties are an added bonus.
Venturer
After you cross the bridge into the Upper Peninsula, a boat trip over to Mackinac Island is a "Must See". Take a step back in time when only a horse drawn carriage is your mode of transportation. Oh, and the Fudge is to die for. It's a great day trip or book a night in the Grand Hotel where celebrities from all over the world have stayed. You'll have to get your check book out, though. A small interior room was $350 and a bigger room with a lake view was over $800 the last time we were there.
