CookFamily
Hello All, I am looking to replace my alternator on my 2001 Monaco Windsor. Should I have it rebuilt or replaced? I live in Maryland. I have a Cummins ISC 8.3 Diesel.
timaz996
My take is rebuilt it. A lot easier.
Just Jim
Do a search... this subject is pretty well documented. My personal opinion is if you have a good rebuilder locally, then go that route. It is a really odd system and many alternator specialists still will not be able to wire it properly if you go the replacement route.
Dr4Film
Rebuild it with authentic Leece-Neville parts.
JDCrow
Pretty coach. I love the older paint schemes.
Dr4Film
JD, I totally agree! In fact the lighter the paint scheme the less Thermal Checking it will have. My 02 Windsor was terrible for Thermal Checking but my 06 Dynasty has very little only because of the paint scheme.

I live in Maryland. I have a Cummins ISC 8.3 Diesel. Find a high quality electric shop and get it rebuilt. Thry MUST order OEM components from Leece. Replace the diodes, even though they might say…TEST OK. If the diodes have even a slight leak, they will drain your chassis batteries prematurely.

jacwjames
I had my alternator rebuilt in 2012, cost ~$185, took a day. That's the route I'd do.
Rikadoo
Hey everybody, FYI we just tried to have a lease Nevelle alternator rebuilt out here in California (bay area) and they’re having a lot of difficulty obtaining parts. (Took it to two rebuilders…)
dleeadkins
I bought one here. The owner is extremely knowledgeable. An exact replacement Leece Neville is available. I had my original rebuilt locally and carry that for a spare. https://www.aj-elec.com/?gclid=CjwKCAiAqNSsBhAvEiwAn_tmxYaKzpgPCZjf0Ki1ZDVRL8II7U0SGRKho5KkKT7Hkakfr4rhLHBo3RoCPw0QAvD_BwE This was my DIRECT REPLACEMENT for my 2002 Windsor 40PKDD. https://store.aj-elec.com/new-160-amp-alternator-for-applications-with-a-battery-isolator-and-duvac-system

CTerry
My alternator went crazy a couple of years ago. On full charge all the time. I pulled it off and took it to the local Western Star dealer here. Took the old one with me so they could see the numbers on it. He went in the back and came out with an exact replacement for it. About $150 as I recall. S..ame numbers, Same red wire out the back. Brand new.
CookFamily
Wow, where are you located? Or rather where do you find a Western Star dealer? Thanks Tom
CTerry
Bonander Truck Sales, Turlock, CA. Good parts department. They also found me a new exhaust manifold when there were none around. sitting on a shelf someplace in the Northeast.

veraken
Here is another good source for a replacement. https://www.qualitypowerauto.com/category_139/RV-Alternators.htm If you are getting it as a spare, get it WITH the pully, it will save you alot of trouble.

Yes! Great suggestion as I goy mine rebuilt to a higher amperage & with a brand new pully installed. When I had to replace my alternator while on the road was a lack of a pully puller in my rig. I emded up going to two different parst stoes until I could borrow one to remove the old pully for an install on my new alternator. Yes! Took more time to run around & get the old pulley off than to physically change out the alternator! Good Luck!
