    Solar Myth

I knew going in my 1000W of solar ($1200) would never pay for it self as we only dry camp for 40-50 days during the summer. Parking in the shade doesn’t help the solar but makes AC unnecessary…more important. I did solar because I got a really good deal ($0.50/watt) on panels that were the right size for where I was mounting them. IF you spend the winter where you need some heat, not AC (currently running the AC) parked in the sun getting lots of solar might have a payback if you DIY it. The best $200 you can spend is on an additional 100A battery charger if you dry camp a fair amount. Even then I still have to run my generator 1+ hours/day… whenever I’m going to use a high amp appliance.
  2. Measuring to the wheel well is close enough and not a wheel bearing but could be a dragging brake BUT it would heat up enough to smell. I had a pulling issue and rotating front tires helped.
  3. Sam’s Daytona $4.69 less 23 cents…$4.46.
  4. No you don’t need any additional protection although plenty of Monaco owners do…didn’t read up on the transfer switch. My 04 Dynasty would drop out around 106-7 Volts…usually at a rally with borderline generator power provided. At one rally is when I finally figured out that the additional amps for the ice maker harvesting the ice was causing the low voltage disconnect. I often turn the ice maker off when dry camping so it doesn’t trigger a low voltage cutoff of the inverter. Will turn it back on when running the generator long enough for it to harvest the ice it’s made. With fully charged batteries I can run 1 AC on a 15-20 amp house outlet but here again, I have to turn the ice maker off…not for low voltage but so I do not trip the breaker in the house.
  5. I guess my trip brings home our. “new” 08 Navigator from Mesa, AZ was kind of boring. Left at 7AM and stopped in the first town in NM to have paperwork Notarized. There’s a tax you kiss goodbye if you sign in AZ. Dealer is supposed to deliver it there but after the 3 hours I drove it, I knew it needed the TRW steering adjusted…good 2” of slop that took more than 90 degrees on the screw to tighten. Amazing the # of well drilling rigs in operation around Odessa, TX on either side of I-20 3 years ago. Stopped before Dallas for fuel and pushed east of it before stopping for the night…activates morning. Stopped in Jackson, MS and looked at a MH my nephew ended up buying. Slept before Atlanta in a test area so I cold get through it and home in time to have breakfast in Bville, 2 hours north of Atlanta. Rig ran well and handled good after adjusting the steering. The boring I-10 gave me time to figure out how to override the radar cruise so it didn’t back be back when a vehicle pulled back in front after passing… hold a little pressure on the throttle until the gap is big enough.
  6. Previous ice maker in a NoCold needed water added to the tray to get it to start making ice.
  7. Fortunately your boost switch connected the batteries together and the generator normally starts off the house. We do a lot of dry camping in the summer and many mornings I have to use the boost to get the generator to spin fast enough to start. Unfortunately the contacts in the BigBoy are bad about corroding to where they don’t make a connection. Fairly easy to take apart and clean but seems like it’s a every 5-7 year issue. Been trying to buy studs with silver contacts (Amsco# SD-289 & 290) but having problems setting up an account.
  8. Not original and the generator can be started from 3 places… on the generator, on the dash, and beside the bed. If it’s cold out it can take 15 seconds holding the start switch down before it actually starts to turn over.
  9. So how many good replies did you get on FB?
  10. My +5 psi “safety margin” is because I’ll still travel with a 25+ mph cross wind. Even with that extra 5 psi the temps and pressures on the downwind side will go up more than normal. Some do it because they only have axle weights. Fortunately my rig is within 200 lbs of each side once I stopped trying to get the rear at exactly 9”.
  11. Having owned a 04 Dynasty for 14 years … it’s definitely a great rig. X2 on pulling on the knob to adjust and 40 psi for a empty Dynasty is plenty of pressure. Not sure why I’d truck wash a rig with 2000 miles before getting home???
  12. NO, the psi on the placard equals the max rating of the axle. Sounds like you’re weights are near the max rating of your 2 axles. Take the placard 90 psi for my 12K tag… guess how muck a single 295 with 90 psi in it can carry…12,200lbs. Same with my 23K drive…100 psi equals 23,500 lbs. Not as obvious on the front axle psi as the axle’s weight is close to its max.
  13. You are worried about the starting cold psi difference but won’t spend the $15 to weigh your axles at a truck stop to know where to start from? You posted you had a 20-30 psi increase in a rear tire which tells me it was under inflated to start with… 15% increase is normal but not 25+%. Go weigh your rig!
  14. Not sure how cleaning the contacts changed the resistance of the coil that engages the contacts. Taking the small energizing wires off and back on maybe.
  15. It’s the BigBoy going bad. You can go to a 10 amp fuse for awhile but if you do have another BigBoy, put it in.
  16. If a “wait to start” light doesn’t illuminate, it’s probably not powering the grid heaters because they are not needed. Have they ever worked?
  17. Not all Goodyears are badyears…yes I’d stay away from the G670s. I ran GY Marathon 295s (made in Germany) on my Dynasty for 10 years before putting them on the back of my dump truck for another 7… still no cracks. That’s when I replaced with 11Rs on the back and 315s on the front.
  18. Phosphoric acid Is the active ingredient in all the rust removers (and in sodas) and I buy it by the gallon below. It’s worth painting with the paint below after properly prepping…or just use AGM batteries and now Lithium.
  19. Yes, but the amount the pressure increases is supposedly less with 100% nitrogen… one of its many advantages. The charts are based on the pressure increasing as the tire’s temperature increases which will be less with 100% nitrogen. Do you need to add 5% more psi than what the charts call for??? This is going to drive me to drinking in the morning or maybe not driving at all… guess I’d better walk to the beer store.
  20. I wonder if the cold psi from the charts is for 78% nitrogen air or 100 % nitrogen since it’s supposed to make so much difference. OH, never mind, I’ll go back to my beers.
  21. I added a switched outlet at the left of the dash…keeps the mess in one area out of the way.
  22. I’ll waste my money on something more useful than 100% nitrogen…beer.
  23. New and improved drag link end behind the tire… same on 04 Dynasty and 08 Navigator.
